Who can learn to sail?
Almost anyone can take a sailing school course in a typical commercial school format, the only requirement is that you are over 18 and have a passion for sailing.
Is it possible to sign up alone for sailing course or only as a group?
Yes of course you can join alone or as group of friends or family. Most of the participants are individuals signing up for the course. Sailing will be in groups of max 4-5 participants.
How long will it take to learn how to sail?
It depends on your individual skill and effort. We always recommend taking at least 3 sailing courses: (Basic, advanced and navigation). In our listed courses we will do the outmost to teach you the knowledge of sailing, technical equipment, weather forecast and good nautical behaviour you would need for later sailing on your own.
What kind of sailing licence is accepted when renting the boat in Croatia?
A list of valid skipper’s licences is provided on official web pages of the Ministry of the sea www.mppi.hr
What kind of certificate Ultra sailing can provide you?
Our sailing school is part of ISSA organisation but this certification is not yet among the licences accepted by the Ministry of the sea.
Does Ultra sailing organise exams for licences valid in Croatia?
No, Ultra does not organize official exams , only preparation for exam. The harbour office is the official provider of sailing licences. Each harbour organize exams once per month. Split's harbour office holds them every Monday in the peak of season.
What kind of licence can I have in harbour master office?
If you pass the exam at the harbour masters office you will get a B licence (from 18 years) which will allow you to handle yachts up to 30FT, if used for personal purposes. This means you will be able to rent any boat up to 12m in Croatia.
What is the price of an exam?
It is 220 euro for our sailing school participants who have signed up for the exam at least 1 month before joining the sailing course. Please bear in mind that the price for a sailing course varies from 495€ to 870€ and does not include exam fees. Make sure to inform us in advance if you wish to attend the exam.
What to wear in sailing school?
Depends on the part of the season but we always recommend to take sports jump suits, white T-shirts, hat, sunglasses, not slippery sport shoes….. We provide sailing suits and gloves so you do not need to worry about that. If you are attending during winter or spring time it is good to have spare warm clothes to wear under sailing suits…
Where can I find accommodation?
For our basic and partly advanced course we do not provide accommodation on board so it needs to be organised by you. We can always help you with finding suitable accommodations. Some participants like to be in a hotel, some in private accommodation, room, apartment etc…. That's why we let you decide on your own.
What is the difference between basic and navigation program?
The basic program is held on Beneteau First 31.7 & Firts 34.7 in our base Split. Along with theoretical lessons you will have 4-6 sailing hours per day in a group of max 5 participants, for the basic course you will need to organise your own accommodation. In the navigation program you will have the course on the Oceanis 35 or First 34.7 with accomodation onboard with anchoring each night in another place.
Can I join the navigation course?
If you have any sailing experience you can join our navigation course.
How can I keep sailing after the course?
Well, the more you sail the more experience you will have which of course builds your self-confidence. So we encourage that you keep sailing after you have finished one of our courses. If you feel confident about your sailing skills and you pass the above mentioned exam, you can charter a bareboat boat from us. If you don’t feel 100% confident after the basic and advanced course, we recommend attending the navigation course or join one of our regattas.
What kind of sailing school for kids can be offered in Croatia?
Local kids in Croatia are joining sailing clubs and sail in optimist classes the whole season. Some sailing clubs open their door during the summer time and organize summer courses for kids in optimist classes for very symbolic prices. They usually sail a few hours per day and sailing instructors are not in charge after and before the course.As sailing clubs have their own rules, Ultra sailing can not help with any of their kids program. Our advice is to contact small local clubs directly.
I have a 16 year old kid...can he/she join your course?
Yes but only if a parent or supervisor is in the group. For this kind of request we usually offer family courses which are adapted to the family needs.
Can I join regatta?
We organize regatta sailing but only for those sailors who finished one of our sailing courses can join us on a regatta course...
Do you recommend any sailing literature …?
Ultra sailing has its own sailing school book „Nautical skills „ and it is included in the price of the sailing school…The book has an English and Croatian version, also it can be ordered extra even if you will not attend one of our sailing courses
